5 Questions: Suz of The Polkadot Magpie

Suz of The Polkadot Magpie sells fine art, jewelry and vintage in her shop, ThePolkadotMagpie.  Her designs are both modern and classic.  Suz enjoys crafting things like ravens out of recycled exotic materials and she does wear polka dots.  She was recently featured on geeksugar and she has a blog all about being married to a custom knife maker: theknifewife.blogspot.com

Here are 5 questions that Suz graciously answered for us:
1. What inspired your shop name?
I once heard that "birds are the souls of humans." That really came home for me. I am a corvid, and bird lover. If I were a bird it would be a Magpie, as they are very smart, clever, talkative, and mischievous! Magpies are one of the few birds that are not nationally protected. The government felt they didn't really need it. :-) I keep 23 hens for eggs...they are absolutely the delight of every day.

2. What inspires you?
Life, and the exotic materials that come into our shop.

3. What is your favorite and least favorite aspect of selling on Etsy?
Most favorite: is the personal relationships I have developed with my customers.
In my other shop Polkadotmagpie, I make personalized items. I love hearing
a new baby has been added to a family. Expectant fathers are so sweet too.

The worst part about selling on Etsy is the rate at which it has grown since I started. I know I am missing some fabulous sellers in our huge ocean.

4. What is the best piece of advice you would give to a new seller on Etsy?
Make sure you have great photos. Go buy photo lights...they are worth whatever you pay. I made my own out of silver heat lamp fixtures and 150watt photo bulbs clamped to different things in my studio. $50 and I was ready to go.

Join a team!

5. If you could go anywhere, where would you go and why?
I have been all over the world. I have been fortunate. We are going to South Africa this September for 3 weeks. I am so excited. We have friends there, and I am thrilled to see "the big 5." I have never been to Australia or New Zealand, so they are on the list.

I love Italy, and would prefer to live there full time.

Suz was a movie costumer in her former life. Here she is in her "mug shot"
Here she is with the late and great Dennis Hopper.

The hens enjoying their morning mash.
And here is Suz in her shop cutting out meteorite on a giant band saw.

What a hoot this is. I am back in my print shop this week creating new items, as well as in the wood shop making garden items for spring.
This is a great team, thanks all.
